               AND BEADS AS WELL AS OTHER ORNAMENTATION. THERE ARE TWO
               MINERAL TYPES IN THIS FAMILY - NEPHRITE, A SILICATE OF LIME AND
               MAGNESIA, HARD, TRANSLUCENT AND PALE GREEN TO BLUISH IN COLOR
              AND THE OTHER IS JADEITE, SILICATE OF SODIUM AND ALUMINUM AND
              APPEARS FROM WHITE/PINK TO BLUE AND BRIGHT GREEN.  THE NAME
             "JADE" IS GIVEN TO BOTH OF THESE TYPES.  MEDICINALLY JADE WAS
             OFTEN POWDERED AND GIVEN BEFORE DEATH TO PREVENT THE
             DECOMPOSITION OF THE BODY. IT WAS ALSO BELIEVED TO EASE CHILD
             BIRTH, DISSOLVE KIDNEY AND BLADDER STONES.  THE NAME NEPHRITE
            WAS DERIVED FROM THE GREEK WORD FOR KIDNEY.

JARGOW-NIB  *THIS WAS A NICKNAME COINED  C.1913 FOR THE POINT PROTECTORS OF HAT
                             AND STICK PINS, ETC. LAWS WERE PASSED MAKING POINT SAFETIES
                             MANDATORY  FOR ANYONE WEARING THESE PINS.

JASPER  *OPAQUE SEMI PRECIOUS STONES IN MANY COLORS. JASPER IS ACTUALLY
                  A TYPE OF QUARTZ CONTAINING GRAINS OF IMPURITIES WHICH DETERMINE
                 THE COLORS.  JASPERS HAVE BEEN THOUGHT OF MEDICINALLY THROUGH
                 THE AGES FROM DRIVING AWAY EVIL TO SNAKEBITES.  JASPERS WERE USED
                 AS AMULETS AND WERE THOUGHT TO BRING RELIEF FROM PAIN.

                              MADE IN "DUETTE" STYLE. THE LUCITE BELLY IS USUALLY CLEAR/SOMETIMES CLOUDY
                              AND CAN BE FROSTED OR EVEN WITH LIGHT CARVING. A FEW DESIGNS WERE DONE
                              BY SOME MFG. IN STERLING. REPRODUCTIONS ARE BEING MADE ESPECIALLY OF THE
                              FAVORITE DESIGNS. OLDER VERSIONS SOMETIMES CARRY A PATENT MARK.
                             SOMETIMES THE PHRASE "CLEAR BELLY" IS USED TO DESCRIBE THE SAME TYPE
                             JEWELRY.

                                SINCE THE TRADITIONAL JEWELRY ITEMS ARE STILL BEING PRODUCED.

JENSEN, JORGEN  *SOMETIMES THOUGHT TO BE A COPY OF GEORG JENSEN, HE IS
                                     ACTUALLY GEORG JENSON'S SON.  HE SILVERSMITHED IN GERMANY
                                     AND HAD A SILVER SHOP INSTOCKHOLM FOR 13 YEARS.  HE DOES VERY
                                     DANISH MODERN DESIGNS IN BOTH PEWTER AND SILVER AND SIGNS HIS
                                     FULL NAME IN SCRIPT.  HE IS VERY COLLECTIBLE IN HIS OWN RIGHT.

          FROM SPAIN. MEDICINALLY JET WAS THOUGHT BY THE GREEKS IN THE
          SECOND CENTURY TO CURE PESTILENCES.  THEY ATTRIBUTED JET TO
          THE GODDESS "CYBELE", GODDESS OF ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO LIFE
          ON EARTH AND IT WAS WORN AS AN AMULET.  CHRISTIANS USED JET IN
          THE MIDDLE AGES FOR PROTECTION ESPECIALLY IN THE FORMS OF A
          HEART OR A CROSS. IT WAS USED MEDICINALLY AS A CURE OF MELANCHOLIA
          A POPULAR MOTIF DURING THE ART DECO PERIOD WAS THE BLACK AND WHITE
          GEOMETRIC MOTIF. THE AMERICAN INDIANS OF THE SOUTHWEST USED
          AMERICAN JET IN THEIR JEWELRY CALLING IT "APACHE TEARS" - ALSO CALLED
          BLACK AMBER.
