Often called the "Stone of Heaven", Jade has always been an extremely valuable stone to the chinese and other pre-columbian cultures. It is a member of the pyroxene mineral family, translucent to opaque and various green as well as other colors. It is often carved into jewelry and beads as well as other ornamentation. There are two mineral types in this family - Nephrite, a silicate of lime and magnesia - hard, translucent and pale green to bluish in color. The other is Jadeite, silicate of sodium and aluminum and appears from white/pnk to blue and bright green. It sometimes contains black inclusions and has a greasy luster. The name "Jade" is given to both of these types. Medicinally jade was worn as an amulet in China to prevent disease. It was also believed to ease child birth, dissolve kidney and bladder stones and calm the mind. Some say the word "jade" came from the Spanish "piedra de hijada" which means loin stone because of the belief that it curred hip problems ! The name "nephrite" was derived from the Greek word for kidney. Some of the most prized and valuable jewelry in the world has been carved using jade.
