Item Description:
I have not ever had any of this ware so I did research it. It can be used for a pin tray or display plate. It is 4 7/8" in diameter and is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. I believe the cat picture is a transfer and not hand painted. The bottom stamping shows "Durability" on a Union Jack flag. It is marked "Weatherby Hanley England Royal Falcon Ware 1-71"; it is over-stamped "Hoffritz" in gold but it photographed black. Some of the information I found is that H. J. Weatherby Company was run as a family. It was founded in Tunstall in 1891, then moved to Hanley the next year. Soon after World War I they began to supply advertising ware to hotels, caterers, hospitals and institutions. Due to the high cost of producing pottery in England compared to mass production elseware in the world, the company was forced into receivership.
