These items are from an estate and are just gorgeous. There are 6 intaglio art glass place card holders -3 in a topaz or amber glass and the other 3 are in an aqua blue. Each stand is 1-1/2" high x 1-1/4" wide and intaglio is set in a goldtone footed base with engraving and a tiny place to set the card in front. These are in very good condition for the age and only have a few pinpoint edge marks on a couple of them. There are 7 total - I'm adding one that has a larger flake on the edge and still very useable. These are not signed but the previous owner is 80 years old and said these belonged to her grandmother. The term cameo originally meant carving a design into a single material in bas-relief. They were usually done using shell, stone or other material. Indications are that cameos were first carved in the 15th or 16th century where the subject matter was derived from the Greek and Roman period. However, popularity flourished during the reign of Queen Victoria. Later cameos were mass produced and molded using celluloid, bakelite, lucite and newer resins. Popular now are laser made cameos because of their intricate detail and color combinations. To care for your cameo Browse more cameo jewelry in our Main Gallery |
