Peruvian silver panel bracelet features a spectacular angel's face with a crown and wings on the central panel flanked by two each of lovely, intricately rendered buds of some sort of flower or plant and birds that look like peacocks or peahens, but may be images of one of the many unusual and indigenous birds of Peru. The angel motif is exceptional and nearly impossible to find in Peruvian jewelry although as early as 1834, The Peruvian Constitution provided defense of the Roman Catholic faith. The angel, birds and buds are cast pieces that have been securely applied to the base panels of the bracelet which have been painstakingly decorated with pinpoint, hand-hammered detail on the scalloped panels.
The bracelet measures a generous 7-3/4" wearable length and the width of the bracelet is approximately 1-1/2" wide. It weighs a hefty 79.2 grams. The bracelet is in Very Good/Excellent Condition with superficial scuffs in the spot on one panel where one's wrist would rest on a table and could easily be polished out if one chose to do so. Otherwise, it is in Excellent Condition. The bracelet is signed, M.E.K. with numbers that we believe relate to the silver content although the second character is illegible. Our test solution registered a very high content silver, so perhaps even better than .925, and this makes sense because of the vast deposits of silver that make Peru the top silver producing country of South America. We were unable to find any information on the signature although the signature is a documented Peruvian one. This one appears to be an early one because the marks are quite simple and the content tests better than .925, . We believe this is a very important, rare and beautiful example of the Peruvian precious metal craft -- a craft that has been practiced in Peru for nearly four thousand years!
