Japanese Satsuma earthenware decorated in overglaze colors was first made in the 1850s. It became a valuable source of revenue for the country and its production increasd dramatically during the Meiji period (1868 - 1912). Although production was initially centered around Kagoshima, Satsuma Province in the west of Japan, major maufacturers sprung up throughout Japan particularily in the suburbs of Kyoto.
