| This beautiful multi-colored basket is traditionally presented to a new bride by her mother or mother-in-law. The wedding basket is a prized possession, and can be used for collecting grains and roots, or as a decoration in the bride's home. The baskets are created by taking the roots of the Makenge bush, boiling them until they're soft, and then weaving them into intricate patterns to convey messages of beauty, marriage and family. This process can take up to 2 months and baskets are often passed down within families for 100 years or more. |
